  • Install storage tanks and heat exchangers – Your collectors will need a storage tank to store their heated antifreeze transfer liquid. The largest component of a solar hot-water system is the storage tank and heat exchanger. They are typically located in a basement, or utility closet. There they can be accessed by antifreeze tubing and water lines. This is the replacement step for a gas-powered water heater. Depending on your home’s size and water consumption, you can install as many storage tanks as you need. This is also when you’ll need to install a backup tank that can be powered by electricity, or gas in case you run out of hot water.
  • Install piping systems to transfer fluid – Your installer will run flexible pipe from your roof to your new tank or tanks to connect your collectors and heat exchanger. Antifreeze fluid flows from one pipe to the collectors and down to the heat exchanging unit. A second line will be added to the heat exchanger’s end to allow fluid to be cycled. Additional pipes will be required to connect multiple collectors. Access to your roof is required to install these antifreeze pipes. This will usually mean drilling two holes in the deck: one for the antifreeze piping and one for the return piping. These holes do not need to be bigger than the pipe diameter and can be easily covered with insulation material or replacement shingles once the installation is complete.
  • Install water transport pipes – Just like antifreeze fluids, water must be circulated through your solar hot water system. Copper piping is used to run water transport lines from your storage tank to your home. Most likely, your home already has the necessary water distribution lines. Your installer will only need to disconnect your old hot water system and connect it to the new storage tank and backup system.

Important side note: You will need to consider the backup hot water infrastructure. Proper wiring is required if your backup water heater is an electric one. A gas line must be installed to the backup tank if you intend to use gas to back up your solar hot water.

  • Install control systems – Two temperature sensors must be connected to wiring and placed along your hot water line. One sensor should connect to your collectors and one to your storage tank’s base. These devices will be connected to the central control system to provide guidance about when antifreeze fluid should be circulated. If the temperature at the collectors falls below the temperature of the tank, it is not necessary to circulate fluid. In fact, this will cool your water.
    Also, a central control system must be connected to the home’s electricity supply. This device is the brain of your solar hot water system, and will allow you to pump antifreeze using the data it receives.
  • Insulate the system – Once everything is in place, insulate every part of any solar hot water job. The installer will seal all connections and plug any holes in the roof. It is essential to properly insulate your system.
